The 1st Ever Jack & Jill Race at Kelowna Yacht Club took place August 17, as part of Okanagan Sail Week.

by Brad Hallam

An excited group of Jack & Jill’s gathered at Tree Brewing Beer Institute across from KYC, for the scheduled skippers meeting.

Our sponsor provided frosty adult beverages to ease the nerves of some, while the 14 boats registered, and were given the Sailing Instructions.

First of all, crews must consist of one with a set in their shorts, and the other must have a set in her shirt!

Secondly, all boats must execute a 360 on each of the legs just to make it a little more interesting than a regular race.

Thirdly, as per the SI’s, in order for any protest to be heard, a 40 oz. bottle of Rum must be presented along with the protest form.

Out to the starting area where Geoff and Daryn, along with Jennifer set a course in the 3-5 knot Northerly breeze consisting of 4 legs.

This meant 4 360’s had to be done by all the competitors.

It was interesting to see the different strategies used as to when and where on each leg they would do them!

Gerrard and Deb on Quintessence, and Larry and Carol on Tranquilizer, the 2 biggest boats in the fleet didn’t turn quite as quickly as the 525’s and similar boats did.

In the end, Razzle Dazzle, Hot Wings, Shadowfax, Eclipse and Ion were the top 5 finishers.

All of the competitors went back to the Gang Plank with big smiles on their faces, and enjoyed some more Tree Brewing beer.

Everyone was asking “when can we do that again”

Perhaps two Jack & Jill races next season ……

Thank you to all the competitors, RC and Tree Brewing Beer Institute for sponsoring the event and providing prizes to the top 3 boats.
